Work sampling is a method for estimating the proportion of time spent by a worker or machine on various activities. It is based on laws of probability in which a large number of instantaneous observations are made at random intervals over a specified period of time of a group of workers, machines and processes.

Primarily, Work sampling is a ratio-delay study which concern the proportion of time a machine is idle or the percentage of time a worker is working.
